Vairochana (or vairochana)

In Buddhism the term Buddha means “enlightened one”. Depending on whom you ask, there have been many Buddhas. The most famous is the original Buddha or Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. Other Buddhas can have different names and indeed certain aspects of the Buddhas can have different names.

Vairochana is a term that refers to the universal aspect of the original Buddha. In a sense this character is the embodiment of the very idea of enlightenment. In some forms of Buddhism the vairochana is the primary figure in the religion.

The Daibutsu at Todai-ji is a gigantic statue of the vairochana and a truly impressive work of art. Below is image of this statue (the people in the lower right show the scale).
