The importance of weaving in Muslim society
An important part of Islam is prayer five times a day. As part of this prayer ritual Muslims clean himself or herself prior to praying and pray in a clean place. Often praying in a clean place is interpreted as not touching the unclean ground during prayer, and prayers are commonly performed on a sajada or prayer rug.
Islam does not require a prayer rug. However, because of the comfort and functionality the provide prayer rugs are widely used. Through the frequent use of prayer rugs the Islamic religion in effect sponsors the weaving of rugs, and for artistic as well as functional reasons.
